UPDATE-- The McPhersons met with Attorney Mr. Fred Meekins, Thursday afternoon. Teresa said Mr. Meekings had completed a review of Smokey's situation, the relavent laws, and similar court cases. She said it was very encouraging to learn that the courts have ,in similar situations, returned pets to their families. Mr. Meekins said that in his opinion we do have solid legal grounds for pursuing the recovery of Smokey. We are happy to let you know that legal effort to get Smokey back has begun.

OUR DOG, SMOKEY Smokey was given to us in November 2007 just after being weaned from his mom. He was hand chosen because when he saw us, he came running and we knew he was the one. A chubby little thing made up of all hair and the brightest eyes that just said, I love you. As he grew, we could tell that he was very loyal and protective over us, even as a puppy, he would bark when someone ca...me up. He was never a bother because he always kept us informed as to what was going on outside. One night he got to barking a little unusual and I opened the kitchen door and a opossum had made his way onto the porch, and Smokey was fiercely protecting his territory. But, he also had a very gentle side, which reminds me of the time our moma cat had her kittens at the neighbor’s house. Next thing I know, I saw Smokey walking across the yard with something in his mouth and the closer he got, the clearer I could see it was a baby kitten. He brought all 3 babies home and believe it or not, he helped groom them, as well. He treated them as if they were his and this is a picture of them way back then and this is one of the grown kittens he nurtured, they slept side by side, for comfort. He and the moma cat actually ate together. He always liked to run free in the woods chasing whatever would move .He is a fun dog to be around, especially for my daughter, Savannah, he was her best friend. Every day after school, she would jump on the golf cart and ask him if he wanted to go for a ride? He would open his eyes wide because he knew she was talking to him, then he would jump up there and go with her. If he heard anything in the woods, he would jump and take off like a bullet. Our neighbor’s dog tagged along as well, she was his shadowing sidekick...Since Smokey has been gone, she sleeps in his safe spot at the house. As time went on and both pets got older and of course bigger, we tried to save money where we could, by buying the 7 way shots, wormers, and flea and tick treatments at the local store and doing it ourselves. I have recently learned that the "Rescue People" don't think that doing it yourself is good enough. Which in their eye’s means, you don't deserve a pet! How crazy is that?? Smokey always stayed close by the house, or once in a while he went in the woods next to our home. He did not roam. We have always stayed in a very rural area out in the country where there IS NO LEASH LAW. So I never worried much about him getting into trouble. Home for Smokey, WAS NOT a place to go, just to get another meal. Home for Smokey was just like it is for us. A place to be safe, away from harm, comfortable and always loved. He would still be here if someone had not STOLEN him for the meanness of it and dropped him off 10.1 miles away. I realize that animals can walk great distances, but, the road he was thrown out on was across a four lane highway that has a solid cement divider between the 4 lanes. He would have had to have wings to get safely across all that. This has been a total nightmare trying to get Smokey back, I have even talked at our local monthly commissioners meeting. I NEVER thought we would be fighting to get OUR family pet back. But, I try to focus on all the good times that we had with him for four years and hopefully one day we will be able to make some new memories with him as well. My family is having a hard time understanding how one person in Wisconsin can pass judgment on a family in NC. What experience and by what authority is she allowed to do that to us and to Smokey. We are heartsick and Smokey is certainly anxious and confused. He needs to be brought home to his family. There are other things I would write about, but I’d love to keep some things to myself that only we know. So, please, please do facebook searches, help us find the people who have Smokey and ask them to return him to us. Also go to the FB page Help Smokey get back home and click on like. Thank you so much for your help. If someone has seen Smokey and knows the people please have them call the Burgaw Police at 910-259-2151 or the Columbus County Sherriffs office at 910-642-6551..Print out the pictures of him,(the black and white Austrilian Shephard) and post them around the Burgaw area. Somebody, somewhere has to know something..Thank you so much for your help. Teresa McPherson for our Family Here are some facts to correct misinformation that is being posted on this page: 1. There is no leash law or sterilization requirement in Columbus County. 2. Smokey did not roam. 3. Smokey was well cared for and recieved medications and preventatives. 4. The McPherson family spent hours driving up and down the roads looking for Smokey. Their other family members joined in the search. Phone calls were made and the neighborhood was canvassed. Animal Control was not called because they did not know about animal control. 5. Smokey was taken from his yard and dumped 10 miles away from his home. 6. Gossip and innuendo has eliminated the truth with false statements and replaced it with judgmental " what ifs, and coulda, woulda , shouda" opinions. 7. You can't put out a truthful or accurate "other side of the story" without the true facts 8. If you have a sincere desire to know the truth and to do the Right Thing, come to Columbus County, visit with the McPhersons. Then if you feel entitled and qualified pass this extremely serious judgment on them. Without doing that you have no right to do so. 9. Smokey belonged to this family for a number of years since he was 6 weeks old. 10. They took good care of him and he was apart of their family ( Please see pics) 11. He had been vaccinated even though the CCAC Team state he wasn't. 12. No he wasn't altered but it's not breaking any NC Law and the CCAC group adopted him out without having him altered as well so I'm more than tired of having this brought up. 13. They had filed 2 Police Reports on Smokey 14. They went to the Vet and wanted to pay the bill but were refused and turned away while their Smokey was being hidden from them behind the kennel doors. 15. Meetings have been requested on all parties to meet and no one from the CCAC Group will accept. So in short there are some FACTS
