Sen. R.C. Soles,

pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon deal.

WHITEVILLE - State Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. didn't receive any favors in a plea deal reached last week for a shooting at his home in August 2009, a special prosecutor said Wednesday.

James Coman, a special prosecutor with the N.C. Attorney General's Office, made this comments during a hearing before Superior Court Judge D. Jack Hooks

Soles pleaded guilty last week to misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon for a shooting at his home on Aug. 23.

Soles' criminal history. include a 1971 conviction that stemmed from Soles' arrest for speeding 115 mph in a 45 mph zone on Bragg Boulevard in Cumberland County.

Hooks ruled the sentencing guidelines required a $1,000 fine and court costs.

This man has been good for our state.

State Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. has been indicted in connection with an August shooting at Soles' Tabor City home.

A Columbus County grand jury returned a true bill of indictment Thursday charging Soles with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

On Aug. 23, Soles shot Thomas Kyle Blackburn. Soles said that Blackburn and another man were trying to intrude into Soles' home and that the shooting was in self-defense.

The indictment was expected since the grand jury had previously found probable cause in the case.

The prosecution is being handled by the Attorney General's Office because District Attorney Rex Gore, who has long ties to Soles, recused himself from the case.

Soles is the longest serving lawmaker in the state and he was a key member of the Democratic leadership in the Senate. He announced last week that he did not intend to seek re-election.

Robert C. Soles, Jr. (born 1934) is a Democratic member of the North Carolina Senate, representing the 8th district since 1977. His district includes Brunswick, Columbus and Pender counties. From 1969-1976, Soles served in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Sen. Soles is the chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

In 2006, the N.C. Bar Association inducted him into the General Practice Hall of Fame. Recently, the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research named him the 8th most effective member of the legislature.

Soles is the Founding President of the Southeastern Community College Foundation, a former member of the Governor's Crime Commission, and former board member of the Columbus County Community Foundation and Opera Company of North Carolina.

Soles graduated with a B.A. from Wake Forest University and received his J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The 74-year-old lawyer has never been married.

This man has been good for our state.

Longest serving state senator may be indicted

A grand jury in Columbus County has found probable cause to indict state Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in connection with the August shooting at Soles' home in Tabor City North Carolina

Soles, 74, a Democrat, is the longest-serving state senator. He shot one of two men that he stated were intruding into his home. He stated through his attorney that the shooting was in self-defense.

Columbus County District Attorney Rex Gore turned the case over Attorney General Roy Cooper, whose office presented the case to a grand jury Thursday. The grand jury has instructed Attorney General Roy Cooper to prepare the necessary paperwork for it to return an indictment against Soles.

Soles' attorney, Joseph B. Cheshire V of Raleigh, said in a written statement that it's too early to say that Soles has been charged criminally. It looks that this matter will continue through our court system.
With out judging in this case lets all pray for justace.
